A Chicago native, Ayo Dosunmu is widely credited with reviving the Illinois Fighting Illini basketball program. Illinois had made the National Championship game in 2005, but by 2017 when Dosunmu committed to head coach Brad Underwood, it had made only two NCAA tournaments since 2009. The team would have made the tournament in 2000, Dosunmu’s second season, had it not been cancelled due to COVID-19, and it has made every tournament since, including as a #1 seed in Dosunmu’s final year.
Somewhat surprisingly, Dosunmu fell to the second round of the 2021 NBA draft and was selected his hometown Bulls. He had a number of impressive performances in his first two seasons, and signed a second contract with the Bulls in the summer of 2023. He recorded a triple-double on December 5th, 2024, and to date (a little more than four seasons) is credited with 161 starts and over 3,000 points in his NBA career. Averaging nearly 20 points per 36 minutes so far in the 2025-26 season, he may be in the midst of the best season of his career.
