Cecil Cooper was a star in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He posted season WARs of 2.0 or better nine straight years, 3.0 or better six straight years, and 4.0 or better four straight years. He led the league in doubles twice and RBIs twice, four times hitting triple digits in the latter category. He earned two gold gloves for his work at first base and three silver sluggers. His .298 career average and .803 career OPS are both impressive marks, although he performed well below his career norms at the dish in 102 playoff plate appearances.
In 1984, at 34 years old, was Cooper’s first at under 1.0 WAR since 1974. He was still playing full time, but batted .275 with an OPS of .693. He did not have a strong cast around him either, and the Brewers went a disappointing 67-94 on the year.
