5x7: 1960 Kahn's Wieners, HOF Roberto Clemente (Pittsburgh Pirates) - SGC 3

$1,653.75

Kahn's (often referred to as Kahn's Wieners) cards are some of the most sought-after food issue cards from the 1950s and 1960s.  Kahn's was based in Cincinnati and in 1955 began issuing cards featuring only Cincinnati Reds players.  Over the years, it expanded to include more Midwest teams, but never reached the coasts, so many stars from the era are not represented.  Roberto Clemente was a staple in the sets.  This card, from the year he and the Pirates won the World Series as huge underdogs, may be one of the most desirable.

The biggest heroics of the series, of course, went to Bill Mazeroski for his walk-off Game 7 championship winner. Clemente had a good, but not remarkable, series at the plate. He stroked nine singles and no extra-base hits for a .310 batting average and three RBIs. All three of his RBIs came in Pirates wins, including one in the bottom of the 8th of Game 7, followed by scoring on Hal Smith’s home run to help take the lead. (Strangely, a player from the losing team won the World Series MVP. In fairness, Bobby Richardson had an incredible series, batting .367 with 12 RBIs.)

There are only 79 graded examples of this card between SGC and PSA, and 30 of those come in at grades below 3.  (Hot dog juice staining is a common condition problem with the set.) This example was graded in February 2024 and has an approximately 1cm wrinkle between the words "World" and "Awaited" which must account for the grade.  The wrinkle is too faint to see in photographs.  A marvelous card.
